Graphic memoirs have become a very popular format lately and Spinning by Tillie Walden is an excellent example. Each chapter begins with an ice-skating move that Walden learned and her memories from that time.
The chapters move sequentially forward in Walden’s life from her early skating days on the east coast of the US through her move to Texas. The reader gets a firsthand look at the world of competitive figure skating as well as a glimpse into Walden’s stories about coming-of-age and coming out. (recommended for 7th grade and up.)
