Grade 4 Update

Welcome back! 
We hope you all had a wonderful and restful February break! Thank you again for all coming to the Grade 4 Expo. It was a huge success and students were so proud to show off all they’d learned to their parents.

From the office: Student Usage of Personal Devices Before and After School
Recently, a few students have begun pulling out their digital devices (phones, computers etc.) to play games in the gym, hallway or playground. To clarify our policy, for ES students, personal devices are not to be used at school. If children are with their parents/guardian on campus, their parents/guardian can override this rule. Aside from that circumstance, these devices are not to be used when on campus and should be turned off and put away during the school day. As for working on school projects, that would need to occur under teacher supervision.  

Student-Led Conferences:
On Thursday, March 27 students in the elementary school will be leading conferences for their parents. This is an important process for students to develop self-confidence, reflect on their practices, and to gain a better understanding of their learning.

What is a Student-Led Conference?
The student is in charge of the conference and shares work selected from his/her learning journey. Evidence of student work have been compiled to demonstrate each student’s growth. The students will share the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout the year. Conferences will last for up to one hour.

Why Student-Led Conferences?
–> Students are given the opportunity to take responsibility for their work, goals and their success throughout the year in developing their portfolio, which they share at the conference. 
–>Students take ownership over the conference; this active involvement promotes student responsibility and accountability. 
–>Students are able to reflect upon their learning when leading conferences.
–>Conferences allow students to share their perspective on their own learning and development with teachers and parents.
–>Conferences allow students to showcase their knowledge, skills, and understanding through actively participating in learning engagements.
–>Conferences provide an opportunity for the students to share their learning with parents.
–>Parents gain a better understanding of the classroom experience of their child.

The student’s role
To collect, select, organize and reflect on the items for their portfolio and to share learning experiences.

The teacher’s role
To ensure students are prepared for the conference.
Teachers will be circulating and participating in conferences as appropriate.  You can always schedule an additional conference with teachers to discuss your child’s progress. 

The parent’s role
To attend the conference with your child. It is important that you are there for them.

To ask supportive and inquiring questions. Examples of questions will be provided during the conferences if you would like to use them.

In Unit of Inquiry (UoI) we are diving into our next unit, How We Organize Ourselves.  We will be looking at the Central Idea:  Technology and innovation impact human-made systems.  Students will be analyzing different systems in our world (ie: traffic systems, airport systems, etc) and looking at how technology is used to automate, improve, and make those systems run efficiently..  Additionally, students will be learning and using coding language to program robots as an age-appropriate introduction to programming technology.

In Math, we continue our unit on identifying and measuring angles. We will be focusing on decomposing angles using pattern blocks. In class students will use concrete examples to discover the additive nature of angle measure. Working with pattern blocks, they see that the measures of all the angles at a point, with no overlaps or gaps, add up to 360 degrees, and they use this fact to find the measure of the pattern blocks’ angles.

Students continue to get excited about reading and writing fantasy stories. They are working on learning about  the different fantasy characters, plots, settings, problems and adventures to help them create their own Fantasy stories. Writers are also learning to organize their ideas into a beginning, middle, and end so that they can have a clear plan before writing their fantasy story/ies. 

Grade 4 Weekly Update

Home Learning and At-Home Reading Reminder
Students are expected to complete 40 minutes of home learning, 4 days per week. Of that 40 minutes, students are to read for 20 minutes (or more). We assign the home learning on the previous Friday (except after vacations) as some students have requested to complete it on the weekend instead of during the week. They DO NOT have to do it over the weekend.

The other 20 minutes of home learning time will be from a variety of the following, depending on the week:

  • Math
  • Typing practice
  • Writing
  • Unit of Inquiry (UoI) (such as research)

*In special circumstances, teachers might coordinate with students to individualize homework expectations.

Reading/Writing/Unit of Inquiry

Students spent this week editing and revising their newspaper articles. They have been learning:

  • to ask questions of interest that can be research (technological advances in energy, energy problems in different countries, energy problems at AAS)
  • to locate, organize, analyze, evaluate and synthesize information from a variety of trusted sources and online networks. 
  • to differentiate between reliable and unreliable sources
  • to use discussions and diagrams to generate new ideas and inquiries
  • Reflect on their learning by asking questions such as:
    • What did I learn today?
    • What don’t I yet understand?
    • What questions do I have now?
    • What can I already do?
    • What will work on next?

Our Grade 4 expo is scheduled on the 14th February. Students are excited to share with you what they have been learning in reading, writing and Unit of Inquiry. It will be at 8:45am to 9:45am.

Math

We are working on wrapping up unit 3 Multiplication and Division lessons. Looking at the data, some students are rockin’ this unit but some students still need practice and support on the following:

  • Using the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems
  • Gain familiarity with factors and multiples
  • Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.

We will be starting our next unit next week about angle measure and plane figures. The central idea of this unit is Mathematicians understand shapes through studying attributes and taking precise measurements.

The  lines of inquiry will define the scope of the inquiry into the central idea:

  • angles
  • classification of shapes
  • symmetry

Message from PE:

The PE team would like to update everyone on the ice skating situation during PE. We have looked at the weather and it is not going to be cold enough for long enough to build a rink this year. Ice skating during PE is canceled for this year. If for some reason this changes we will let you know. We know how much the students enjoy this experience and hopefully next year we will have a colder winter. There are many rinks in the city that are still functioning, it could be a great family outing. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

ES Swim Club Term 3/4 Message: 
Dear Parents,
The Elementary School Swim Club is an activity designed to improve stroke technique, aerobic fitness, and to have fun in the water for Grades 2 – 5. The Aquatics Staff are offering an evaluation for the students that would like to join the ES Swim Club VIEW
 
In order to see the number of participants and to evaluate their skill level… Any G2-G5 student that would like to register for the T3/T4 ES SWIM CLUB ASA, is required to complete a PRE-REGISTRATION SWIM EVALUATION. There are no exception that can be made.
 
  • The evaluation will be happening on January 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, Feb 3 from 15:30 – 16:10
  • You must use this Registration Form to make an appointment with the Aquatics Staff
  • If your child will not be able to attend one of the following dates and times, they will not be able to join the program.
    • Students may register for ONLY ONE ES Swim Club session (pending numbers)
  • Frequently Asked Questions regarding the ES Swim Club – view here for requirements and evaluation criteria 
ES Swim Club will run from March 11 – May 28.  The students will swim for one extra week during (April 13-16). All ES Swim Club students will be invited to participate in the Penguin Spring Classic on May 16.

Last Update of the Year

The Winter Break is nearly upon us! We hope you enjoy time with your family and friends during the festive season. School will re-commence on January the 13th. Please notify your Teacher AND ES Admin. if your child will not be returning to school at this time. 

 

Skating in PE

Please remember that right after the break, skating lessons commence during PE classes. Students need the following gear for their lessons:

  • Ice Skates (fitted, sharpened and can be easily put on independently)
  • Snow pants
  • Winter Coat
  • Winter Gloves
  • Hood on coat (for under helmet, no hats)
  • Strong non-tear bag for skates, (the PTO store has these)
  • A piece of cloth or small towel to dry metal blades and clean skates 

Please have your child’s name on all skating clothing.

Home Learning
There will be no Home Learning during the holidays. It will re-commence on January the 13th. 

READ as much and as often as you can over the break. Good news! Your Overdrive account is now active just in time for Winter Break. You can either navigate to the Overdrive link from the ebook part of the library website or type it in directly: aas.lib.overdrive.com

You have “juvenile” level access so you’ll see everything in our Elementary online collection.  Some books have an ebook icon and some have the audio book icon. It’s pretty user-friendly so dive in and enjoy. If you have any trouble then stop by to see either Ms. K or Ms. Kris with your preferred device so that we can help.

You can find Overdrive in the app store on your preferred device and download it for free. Our library name is Anglo American School of Moscow. You will need to search for that and then input your username/password. Once everything is established the first time it goes very easily and becomes password free.

We hope you will all enjoy both traditional and digital books and that you will have a break  filled with wonderful stories!

Ice Skating

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ICE SKATE INFORMATION AND SCHEDULES

Starts right after the Winter Break on January 13

WHO: All ES students ice skate (Pre-k through grade 5) 

SCHEDULING:

WHAT TO BRING:
(Please have your child’s name on all skating clothing)
Ice Skates Easily put on by themselves, fit, sharpened (prefer Non Lacing PreK – Grade 2)
Snow pants
Winter coat
Winter Gloves
Hood on coat (for under helmet, no Hats)
Strong non-tear bag for skates, the school store sells ice-skate bags in PTO store
–>Piece of cloth or small towel to dry metal blades clean after skating 

SCHOOL PROVIDES:
• A helmet with face-guard  (NO bicycle helmet or helmets without a face guard)
–>Students may bring their own ice hockey helmets with face guards.

Is It Really November 1st Already?!?!

Dear Fourth Grade Parents,

Welcome to November!

DESIGN THINKING
Over the next couple of weeks, students will begin (or continue learning) about the Design Thinking Process by doing a “rapid cycle challenge.” We need your help! Please have your student bring in any of the following recyclable materials you have at home:

  • cereal boxes
  • egg cartons
  • empty tissue boxes
  • toilet paper rolls
  • paper towel rolls
  • plastic containers (washed and dried)
  • plastic tubes/pipes
  • used bubble wrap
  • used bottle caps
  • corks
  • used (but clean) tin foil
  • used foam pieces (any sizes or shapes)

Please continue to save and send these items in with your students until December

FOOD DRIVE
As mentioned in this week’s newsletter, the AAS Food Drive began this week. Please send in any food donations you can with your student. Bins have been placed in front of each divisional office. This food drive will help benefit the Noy House here in Moscow. For more information, please take a look at this presentation. COLD/WINTER WEATHER GEAR
Winter has arrived in Moscow, eeeekkk!!!  It is imperative that your son/daughter come with the appropriate clothing, especially with this recent snow! As stated in the AAS Family Handbook:

Recess is spent outside, under supervision of the school faculty members and the Playground Supervisor. Warm and appropriate outdoor clothing and boots are imperative. There are three recess periods, one each for grades PK-1; 2-3; 4-5. A second recess is given to the students in conjunction with their lunchtime. With the limited winter daylight hours and long commutes for many students, the school feels it is important for students to be outside as much as possible. Unless below -18C (or windy between -15C and -18C) or raining, students are sent outside. If the student is well enough to attend school, it is the school policy that he/she should go out for his/her outdoor recesses. Exceptions are made only under extreme circumstances.

Hands, legs, ears and feet should be covered outside during the winter as temperatures can go as low as -30 degrees Centigrade (-22 degrees Fahrenheit). Boots should be warm and waterproof. Jackets and snow pants or snowsuits are essential as early as October. Sturdy rainwear and lighter rain/mud boots are also necessary in the fall and spring. It is highly recommended that clothing and personal articles be labeled with your child’s name and homeroom teacher’s initials.

HALLOWEEN
A special thanks to all the room parents for making today EXTRA special. Students had a great time at today’s class party and it wouldn’t have been possible without their leadership and support. We were so amazed by everyone’s level of participation. Please enjoy some pictures from the day.

Dear 4th Grade parents,

Happy Goal Setting Conference Day! We would like to share the following information with you. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Word Study
This year, grade 4 has decided to try having mixed groups for word study. Each Monday, from 8:45am to 9:35am, students will go to different classrooms to be introduced to their word study sorts and the words they will be studying. Students will keep these same words for two weeks. 

How can you help your student at home? 

  • Ask them what pattern they are studying in word study.
  • Have them find examples of words that fit their pattern in the books they’re reading.
  • Have them tell you a story using some of their word study words in their story.

Reminder

Dear Parents,

Next Monday and Thursday, September 16th and 19, our students will be taking the MAP assessments. On Monday, the Math will be administered, and on Thursday, the Reading will be administered.

On Wednesday, September 25th, students will be administered the language test.

Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast each day. Thank you for your continued support, as we are off to a great start.

G4 Strings Information

Hello 4th grade parents,

This week on Tuesday August 27th and Wednesday (28th), your children will have a presentation during music class on an additional option that is available to 4th graders. Instead of going to general music two times per cycle, they can choose to sign up for small group lessons on violin, viola or cello (which they will learn abut in the presentation). If they choose to study one of these instruments, they will alternate one music class and one string lesson class per cycle. We are excited to continue offering this popular choice.

After they have had their presentation (homeroom Martelle/Klosinski on Tuesday, then Schnell/Lewis on Wednesday), talk about this option with your child. If they are interested, you will sign up using this form. After completing the form, you will have the option to do a second form for renting an instrument through the school if you do not have one of your own.
