Where We Are in Place and Time
Dear Third-Grade Families,
For the last three weeks of Distance Learning, we will be teaching an abridged version of our Where We Are in Place and Time unit. The lines of inquiry for this unit are:
– how structures provide evidence of time and place.
– why and how people build structures.
– creating our own structures for a purpose.
We often refer to this unit as the “structures” unit, and during it we investigate some scientific principles behind the construction of structures, study and try to build our own bridges, towers, etc. There are going to be a lot of great activities the students will be able to do at home, and we are hoping this is a unit your child will really enjoy, even though our time to explore the concepts will be limited.
In the past we have sometimes been able to invite a parent in to be a guest speaker during this unit, and we are hoping we might be able to do the same again this year even through Distance Learning. If any of you work in any field related to this unit; architecture, design, engineering, etc. and you would be willing to be a guest speaker for us, please contact your child’s teacher and let them know. It would probably take the form of a recorded interview that we would share on the slides for the students to see so you would not need to worry about coordinating a time to appear “live.”
Please let us know if you would be interested in this opportunity, and thank you for your continued support at home during our Distance Learning.
