Dear G3 Families,
We have kicked off our unit on How We Organize Ourselves. In this unit, students will become young entrepreneurs and will independently set up their own business for Grade 3 Market Day which will take place on March 13, 2020 (time to be announced, but it will be in the afternoon). Parents are welcome to come and participate as customers.
This project will be managed step-by-step for the students.
Here are a few items you will be seeing over the next few weeks for homework:
1. Materials list
2. Cost analysis (loan cost divided by unit cost)
3. Loan contract
4. Business License
Environmentally Responsible Young Entrepreneurs
We will be discussing how we can reduce our environmental footprint as a young entrepreneur. We encouraged students to think about past learning and being environmentally conscious when setting up their business. Students will receive a Zero Waste sticker for businesses where the customer purchases and leaves no waste behind.
INDEPENDENCE (STUDENT AGENCY)
This is a great project for interaction (ideas) between parents and children. But, the more students do themselves, the more they will gain from the learning process. The students should make the products themselves (even if it is difficult) and should set-up before and clean up after the market. If everything is always done for them, there is no way for them to learn. The greatest learning takes place when things are not easy and they have to struggle through it themselves!
Please mark your calendars for Friday, March 20th which will be our Grade 3 Expo. Students will have time after Market Day to calculate profits and draw conclusions about the success of their business. They will be ready to share their learning from this unit with you, and we hope you will be able to join us. More details about Expo will be announced as the date approaches.
We are looking forward to seeing all the third graders blossom as young entrepreneurs in the coming weeks! More information about Market Day will come as we move through the unit and get closer to March 13th. In the meantime, please let your homeroom teacher know if you have further questions.
