AAS Grade 6 Food Drive – October 15 to November 15, 2019

Please help spread the word about the AAS Food Drive.AAS Food Drive benefits the Noy House, which is a shelter that helps those in need who are willing to work to get back on their feet. People living there include those who work in the community for small wages, the elderly, those with disabilities, and women with children. We need non-perishable food (cans, dried foods, and baby food) and hygiene items (shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, diapers size 4 to 6, and baby wipes). Our goal is to collect 10,000 items. There are collection bins in front of the ES Office.

Unit of Inquiry – Artifact homework: If your child has not brought in artifacts yet, please help him/her to bring them in early next week.  We ask that you please help your child gather 8-10 artifacts (physical objects) to bring to school as the basis for creating their personal museum.  Please see our earlier email or contact your child’s teacher for more details.

Reading – Thank you for keeping up with daily reading with your child. Our up-coming conferences will be a great time to let the teacher know if you feel your child is bringing home books that are “just right” for his reading level or if you have any concerns about reading.

Writing – We will be wrapping up our Personal Narrative writing unit soon. As part of the wrap up, the students will be expected to edit and ‘publish’ a writing piece of their choice. Ask your child questions like, “What do writers check for when they edit their writing?  If a part does not make sense, what should a writer do? What do you want to get better at in writing?

Math  – Get out the dominoes and practice addition strategies. Draw a domino and add – the highest wins. Does your child recognize a 4, 5 and 6 without counting? When he is adding, your child may count all of the dots. Then he may say one number (hopefully the largest) and count on. They should begin to recognize doubles and adding of 1, 2 or 3 automatically. The more often you play, the more efficient he will become.

Conferences – Our student/parent/teacher conferences are on Thursday, November 28. There is no school that day, instead you accompany your child to school at your scheduled time to discuss goals and progress with the teacher. You will be receiving an email from the ES office with instructions for signing up for your conferences. If you have any difficulty in this process, please contact the office. Students wear formal uniforms for the conference.
