Help Us Thank our Support Staff – Our school has a large community of support staff who keep AAS safe, clean, and running smoothly. Each family is asked to help us show our appreciation for our green guys, security guards, cleaning staff, drivers, secretaries, etc. We want our support staff to know we greatly appreciate their efforts. Each grade level has a different assignment and first grade families are requested to bring cakes, cookies, cupcakes or pastries on the morning of Thursday, June 13.

Sharing the Planet – Plants – Field trip to the Apiary! On Tuesday we are heading to the Apiary in Kuzminki park where we will learn about bees and their relationship to plants. We will be outside much of the day, so students should be dressed for the weather. Please apply sunscreen at home and you may want to send a hat. All first graders will need a snack, lunch and water bottle from home on Tuesday.

Field Day on Friday – Our PE teachers have planned some fun events on the field. Bring a water bottle and hat, and dress for action. We will be out for about 90 minutes in the morning. Please apply sunscreen at home.

Writing – We are deep into our informational book writing and are looking at a variety of text features. Students have begun to include headings, a table of contents, and labeled drawings. Some may be ready to include a glossary or index as well. Ask your child about his “all about” book and how it is different from other books s/he has written.

Math – Have you got dominoes at home? They are great for playing a variety of games and helping students build number sense. When you think of the number five, do you see it as five spots as it is on dice or dominoes? A visual image of a number helps us to understand it better. Use the dominoes to play adding games. Each player draws one and adds. Highest number wins. Look for your child’s adding strategies. Is he counting all of the spots? Is he putting the highest number in his head and counting on? Try drawing two dominoes –  Is he seeing and adding doubles automatically? Is he recognizing and adding numbers that make ten?

Morning Play Schedule – Remember we all go to the field each morning (rain – cafeteria), where we will be picked up by a teacher when the bell rings.

Leaving Early? If your child will not be in school through the last day – Thursday, June 20 (12:00 dismissal), please email the classroom teacher as soon as possible. We want to make sure all work and extra clothing are gathered for each student. This will also assist our parents planning our end-of-year celebration. Thank you.
