Short Week – No School Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10. Enjoy the long weekend!
Sharing the Planet – Plants – As we begin our unit on plants, we are asking each family to send in an item from home that comes from plants. The goal is to begin to see how much of what we use and consume are products of plants. If you have time, you may want to send an internet photo of the plant that product comes from to assist us in making connections. Please help your child to choose and send in a plant product any day in the next 2 weeks. Thank you for your help with this.
Writing – We are deep into our opinion writing and are finding there are lots of things we like or don’t like. We begin with our opinion. (i.e. I like yellow!) and then we add reasons (i.e. Yellow is great because it reminds me of sunflowers.) Then we might add a detail to our reason (i.e. Sunflowers grow so big and I think the seeds are yummy!) Then we move on to our next reason and add details for it. Ask your child about some of his/her opinion pieces.
Math – We are working on measurement using non-standards units. We had a great introductory lesson with Ms. Hart this week. Ask your child about measuring horses. Do some non-standard unit measurement practice at home. How many spoons long is the table? How many legos high is my toy dinosaur? How many little brothers long is the bed? The goal is to see the importance of laying objects end-to-end without gaps and to always use the same size object (i.e. not 2 different-sized legos).
Tuesday is Friday?! – Because we have had more school holidays on Friday, some students have missed several swimming classes or art classes. So Tuesday, May 14 we will follow a Friday schedule. That means 1HM and 1DE will have swimming on Tuesday, May 14 and again on Friday, May 17 as usual to make up for some missed lessons.
Thursday and Friday, May 9 and 10 – No school, Victory Day
