International Day tomorrow! – Come and enjoy the food and fun!

After School Activities Finished – No activities next week. Please make sure that all concerned are aware of your child’s schedule changes. Mother Tongue Classes continue until Thursday, June 14.

Sharing the Planet –  Plants – We are enjoying observing and nurturing our plants. It is amazing to see what can come from a tiny seed. With all of the plant products our classmates have shared we are learning how valuable plants are to us. Check out our plant field trips!

Field Trips – Permission slips for our upcoming field trips came home this week. Please sign and return them as soon as possible. We can take 2 parent volunteers on each trip, so let us know if you would like to join us. Here are the travel dates again: Botanical gardens on June 8 (1DC, 1HM) and June 14 (1WJ, 1AO, 1MS),  Kuzminki park apiary on June 18. Students will need lunches and water bottles from home for both trips.

Reading – With the great weather we’ve had, we are sure that students are getting out more to play. We hope you are still finding time to listen to your child read each day. Please let the classroom teacher know if your child needs assistance choosing or finding appropriate books. Remember it should be an enjoyable experience for you both! The goal is to develop a love of books and a reading habit that continues all summer long.

Math – Helping your child begin telling time? Start with only the short hour hand and ask what does that tell you. Is it on the 5? Just after 7? Between 8 and 9? Concentrating on the short hour hand first will make it easier to then add the minute hand. The minute hand can be very difficult as it does not use the numbers on the clock but the multiples of 5. When we begin telling time, it is typical for students to report 9:30 as “nine six.” In first grade we work to read and understand time on the hour and half hour.

Leaving AAS? – If your family is leaving AAS, please inform the classroom teacher and the office so that we can say goodbye and make preparations. Also let the teacher know if your child needs to clean out his/her locker and take home school work earlier to accommodate your pack-out day.

Traveling before the last school day? If your child will not be at school through June 20, please let the teacher know so that your child can say goodbye to classmates and bring home belongings. This is also helpful to know numbers when planning our last field trip (June 18) and class party.
