Friday is Crazy Hair Day! – Changed to Friday, May 11.
How the World Works – materials – The first grade scientists are enjoying their investigations into materials. This week most of the classes focused on liquids and their properties. Thank you for helping your child bring a mystery liquid to school to share. Most of the students experimented mixing solids and liquids to see if they could produce a gas. Ask your child about it. If your child gets inspired to try some of his own experiments at home, please send in photos or video so that he can share it with his classmates.
Writing – We continue to work on our informational books in writing. We are beginning to include text features like headings, labeled drawings, and a table of contents. Ask your child what he/she is writing about and some of the facts included in the book.
Math – This week we used the 3rd grade market day to give students an authentic math experience as they made a “shopping list” of what they might like to buy and what the total cost might be. Although this involved adding numbers beyond 100, it was pretty motivating for the students who were excited to shop. Thanks for sending the money with your child today to complete our math experience. Homework for next week: For our study of shapes, please send in a wrapped shape (empty cereal box, milk carton, can, etc.) any day next week. Your child will share the shape by telling about its properties. “It has 2 flat surfaces and it can roll. What shape is it?” Thanks for your help with this.
